Textbook FAQs

How do I find the textbooks I need?

On the textbook list:

The list is organized alphabetically by course number (e.g., BIOL-1020).  Scroll down to find your course.

Or, use the program or app's search function (e.g., on a computer often Ctrl+F/Cmd+F) to find your course name, number, textbook title, etc.

How do I access my digital textbook?

In-store redemption codes must be redeemed here.  Please note that once a code is redeemed, it is no longer refundable.

Off-site digital access codes are linked from our textbook list to a 3rd-party vendor.  Please follow instructions there for payment and access.

Why does my textbook not have a price?

Texts without prices are not presently in stock.  Please check back; we will be updating the list frequently.

Or, it's an e-text that must be purchased off-site.  A link is provided.

Why is no textbook listed for my course?

Where no textbook is listed, the instructor has not provided any information.  Instructions will be provided in class.

Are there used textbooks to purchase?

We have a limited number of used textbooks, and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.  This is noted on the last column.

There are multiple formats of the same textbook.  How do I decide?

Please choose your texts carefully according to the format you prefer.  There are both price and customer service differences between the options:

  • Hardcover, Paperback, or Loose-Leaf (or unidentified).  The traditional physical textbook.  Available from CommonWord for most texts.  Fully refundable as per the textbook return criteria below ONLY if the shrink-wrap is NOT broken.
  • Hardcover, Paperback, or Loose-Leaf with Digital Content.  A physical copy with additional digital materials, typically shrink-wrapped.  These are available from CommonWord for select texts.  Fully refundable as per the textbook return criteria below ONLY if the shrink-wrap is NOT broken.
  • Used Items.  We have a limited number of used textbooks. They are available on a first-come, first-served basis. They are NOT refundable.
  • In-Store Redemption Codes.  A physical card with an access code to your digital text.  These are available in-store from CommonWord for select texts.  The access card is fully refundable as per the textbook return criteria below if it has NOT yet been redeemed.
  • Off-Site Digital Access Code.  An off-site digital text either purchased for a lifetime or rented for a set time.  Although we link to off-site digital options, the student takes full responsibility for the purchase and submits direct payment to the 3rd party.  CommonWord cannot offer any customer service or any refund.
  • Other items (e.g., lab coats) are available from CommonWord for select courses.  Fully refundable as per the textbook return criteria below if the packaging has NOT been opened.

What payment options do I have?

We accept cash, cheque, debit or credit card payments in-store.

I have additional questions.  Who should I contact?

If you have questions about textbook requirements or versions, please contact alneufeld@cmu.ca.  Other general questions can be directed to info@commonword.ca.

Textbook Returns

Returns can be made prior to the semester's final return date (if that is within 2 weeks of your purchase) and meet these criteria:

  • You have the original receipt.
  • The item(s) were purchased new from CommonWord. Used textbooks are final sale and not returnable.
  • The item(s) are in new condition and complete with all components.
  • Books that were shrink-wrapped need to be returned unopened with the shrink-wrap intact.
  • Access cards remain unredeemed.

Refund method will match the original purchase method (e.g., credit card).

We cannot accept returns of online textbooks that were not purchased through the bookstore.

Used Textbooks

We accept students' used textbooks that match this criteria:

  • The text (and edition) is being used for the upcoming semester
  • The text was previously purchased new (i.e., we don’t resell used textbooks)
  • The text is in good shape (i.e., pages are intact)

We sell used textbooks on consignment and will offer up to 50% of its value to the student after it’s been sold.  Value is determined by its condition and its component parts (i.e., a used access code has no value, though its print version still does).

The textbook list goes public early Jan (Winter) and early Sept (Fall).  We accept used books 2 weeks in advance of these dates.  Please contact us to verify whether your textbook(s) is assigned for the coming semester.
