The matriarchs and patriarchs of the Bible can be seen as "unlikely choices" - barren, dysfunctional, threatened, betrayed. Nonetheless each are called to witness to God's activity in human history. The life stories of Isaac, Rebekah, and their sons Jacob and Esau testify to this unlikely choice phenomenon. By modern standards, one would no doubt call Isaac and Rebekah's family dysfunctional. Conflict emerges in this story because of jealousy, betrayal and bad behaviour resulting in a severing of relationships between two brothers. Jacob and Esau's reconciliation story is remarkable - pointing repeatedly to God's grace and protection.
