The teachers who wrote down the proverbs and other wisdom literature were responsible for making their students aware and wise. Getting smart was the way to keep kids out of trouble. While other parts of the Bible talk about how God gets involved in our lives and protects us from evil, wisdom emphasizes that people can figure out right and wrong without God having to step in and zap them with a lightning bolt. While revelation comes at God's choosing, wisdom is available to everyone at all times. Wisdom literature teaches us that we gain knowledge of the world, ourselves, and God through experience and observation. It also asks the kind of questions that youth today ask - questions concerning God's justice, questions of fairness, and suffering of the innocent.
