Apocalyptic literature, including Daniel and Revelations, gets a bad rap, because people have been told it's an inexplicable code that only a few can decipher. Not true. Apocalyptic tells the same gospel story as the rest of the Bible, but in visual, almost video form. Even when the future looks grim, the attitude of apocalyptic literature is hopeful: Hang on. God isn't dead, even when it seems we've been abandoned. God abides with us. The message of Daniel and Revelation is still: God is in control of history. In God's time rescue will come.
