Clothe Yourself in Love

According to Genesis 3, the world's first garment-maker was God. Dresses, pants, shirts, socks-on the surface, clothes seem like such a simple thing. Clothes keep us warm. They protect us from the sun. yet isn't it amazing how clothes are so much more?

Picture a sari, or kimono, a pair of moccasins: clothing identifies us as part of specific culture groups. Picture a Jewish yarmulka, a Muslim chador, an Amish bonnet: clothing can symbolize our most deeply-held beliefs

Or just think of that shirt you once had which was just the right color and how good you felt each time you wore it. Or the skirt that swirled around your legs with a gentle swish. Or the old worn sweater than was so soft and huggable you couldn't bear to get rid of it. The right clothes can uplift our spirits and make us delight in the bodies God gave us.

Clothing can also be the source of intense divisiveness, ridicule, and hurt within families and communities. About as long as there have been Mennonites, we have devoted appropriate Christian attire.

Still, as author Jennifer Davis Sensenig points out in lesson 8 of this Bible study, there is at least one dress code that we can all agree upon;

Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
