There were many camps in northern Russia of Siberia filled with exiles. They were to work until their death to accumulate foreign currency for the State. The murderous living conditions in those desolate regions, the unhealthy climate and food lacking necessary nutrients ensured the desired "physical destruction" of the exiles.
