Marvin lived there, with his siblings on that farm, "one mile east of Edensville" as his dad always used to say. These stories are based on the author's memories of his life in the nineteen fifties and early sixties, between age six and seventeen, straddling the two worlds of the farm and the village where the family attended school.
Since it is clear that none of the family remembers events the same way and he would be held accountable for every detail with which his siblings did not agree, he thought he would be best served writing his memories as a series of loosely interconnected short stories, or "creative non-fiction." Then he can use the excuse of "literary license." To this end he speaks in the third person and disguises with pseudonyms the memorable characters he knew while growing up.
Also see I'm so glad for Sunday..., the sequel to this book.
