This book is a sequel to One Mile East of Edensville. It follows the life of Marvin between age six and seventeen, growing up in the Mennonite Church in Ontario. Each chapter develops an aspect of the growing faith of young Marvin largely shaped by his experience of life in St. James Mennonite Church, in the village of St. James, near the town of Wellington.

The stories in this book are told as creative non-fiction. While Marvin has many fond and nostalgic memories of life growing up in the church, there are also some more "gritty" aspects to be told. Thus it serves his purposes well to disguise with pseudonyms the memorable characters in the church of his youth...

The journey of faith is a lifelong pilgrimage. Children are not born with faith; it is something which they experience and later learn to speak about. Scholars have shown us that there are various ages and stages of faith development. Children can only be expected to commit as much of themselves as they understand to as much of God as they understand at any point. This certainly was the experience of Marvin as described in this book.
