In our time, Darwin is widely depicted as a godless naturalist. The publication of his theory of natural selection is imagined as an instantaneous parting of the ways between science and religion. In reality, the great scientists who inspired Darwin saw the pursuit of science as a divinely ordained gift and responsibility. Darwin's biographer James Moore maintains that Darwin's understanding of nature never departed from a theological point of view.
