Mary Remembers: A Conversation with Luke, the Gospel Writer

2012, 7 pp
On the fourth Sunday of 2012 Advent at Mannheim Mennonite Church we had a different take on the Mary and Elizabeth story. Worship planners wanted something other than a traditional sermon. What resulted was a 20-minute (approximately) presentation by three actors.

The script is basically an older Mary telling Dr. Luke in an interview what she recalls of the annunciation, her visit to Elizabeth and the birth of Jesus, concluding with her rapturous outpouring of the Magnificat, all of which Dr. Luke records on his note pad in preparation for writing his gospel. With only three people and minimal staging (a rocker and two other chairs) and props it took little time to prepare and was easy to stage. The congregation was moved and inspired by this fresh and somewhat provocative telling of the story.
