Free, Prior, and Informed Consent
Free, prior, and informed consent (FPIC) is a key tenet of reconciliation and a right of Indigenous Peoples that flows from and is inextricably linked to the inherent right of self-determination. It is a human right that is enshrined in international law, including the United Nations Declaration of Indigenous Peoples, and a right which finds its basis in Indigenous laws and values.
This short video is a good introduction to FPIC. Also consider reading the online magazine issue, The Right to Free, Prior & Informed Consent, from the Northern Public Affairs magazine.
