Jesus the Refugee: A Christmas Eve Service

2010, 14 pp
After reading a prayer story from MCC Voluntary Service Worker Shalom Wiebe, the idea of Jesus as a refugee caught the imagination of MCC BC Communications writer Angelika Dawson. Shalom works with displaced persons in Colombia and she talked about the way in which the people of Teusaquillo Mennonite Church identify with Jesus who had to flee his homeland as a baby.

“I thought it would be wonderful to explore that idea together with Shalom. I also enlisted the help of Heidi Epp Yusef – one of the most creative women I know,” Angelika writes. “Together we explored the story of Jesus, of Marcos, one of the congregation members of Teusaquillo Mennonite Church, and a story that comes from Heidi’s own family in the Mennonite exodus from Russia. All those stories have been woven together into a reader’s theatre that weaves story and song together.”

This resource includes a script that is supported by a Power Point slide show as well as music resources. It is designed to be adaptable to your congregation’s format. We hope that you will find this resource to be a blessing to you and your congregation!
