Pre-Election Campaign: Proposal for Canadian Federal Department of Peace

2009, 1 pp

MC Canada invites congregations and individuals - in preparation of an election campaign - to formally ask electoral candidates their position regarding a prospective Peace Department.

Download a sample letter for background information. Also download here a sample question to be posed to your electoral candidates. Include contact information in your letter and request a meeting, if you feel inclined. Modify both documents to meet your own needs and local context.

On April 19, 2008, the Mennonite Church Canada General Board approved a Christian Witness Council recommendation calling for the denomination to become a supporting organization of the federal Department of Peace movement.

As outlined on the campaign website, the primary mandate of a peace department would be to rejuvenate and enhance Canada's traditional peacebuilding role in areas of nonviolent conflict resolution, human rights, and social and economic justice.
