A Benedictine monk, Laurence Freeman's life's work is dedicated to peace and non-violence. Accordingly, "meditation is the way of peace, the way in to the heart of God, the only way to disrupt today's cycle of global violence." Freeman recalls several legends about St. Benedict, describing him as a "healer, problem solver, spiritual father, teacher, builder and missionary." Pope Gregory made St. Benedict's Rule the overlying rule of monasticism and Western culture, "second only to the Bible as a way to holiness and a way to heal what is broken in society today." Freeman contrasts holiness with piety and 6th century Barbarians with 21st century Barbarians.
