Enough Food?: Uncovering Five Major Factors to Hunger

Book, 20 pp
At the beginning of this study, one should gain an idea of the starting point of the group regarding world hunger. One way to test this is to have participants respond true or false to the statement: The reason there is hunger in the world is because there isn't enough food to feed everyone.

The answer is false, but this common myth persists and keeps people believing that the solution to world hunger is simply to produce more food. In reality, abundance best describes the world food supply. There is enough food (grains, beans, meat, eggs, fruits and vegetables) produced each year to provide every person in the world with over 2 kilograms of food every day. Even in countries that have food excess, some people live and die with the pangs of hunger while food staples rot in storage houses.

Many people in the world lack food security. Food security is where all people have access at all times to enough food to lead active, healthy lives. It also means people are enabled to feed themselves over the long-term.

5 Major Factors to Hunger:
  • Conflict - You can't grow food on the run!
  • Debt - You can't grow food if you are growing flowers for export!
  • Deforestation - You can't grow food without soil!
  • Gender discrimination - You can't eat if you are ignored!
  • Poverty cycle - You can't eat if you don't have the means!
This packet is adaptable to your objectives and the amount of preparation you want to provide. An overview presentation requires an hour. A more in-depth discussion study would need four to five hours.
