Canadian Interfaith Call for Leadership and Action on Climate Justice

2011, 8 pp
On Oct. 24-25, 2011, Willard Metzger, General Secretary of Mennonite Church Canada participated in a climate change forum together with representatives from over 30 faith traditions. He was asked to address the forum, and the next day was encouraged to present the same address to a gathering of Canadian Senators and Members of Parliament. It was humbling to later receive a note from Senator Grant Mitchell which read, “Thanks for this. It is exceptionally good. And thanks for your leadership and inspiration on this important issue.”

We appreciate the comment, but more important than being commended by senators is a call to churches to speak and act on the issue of climate justice. In his address, Willard said, “Whether the developed world takes responsibility for the effect of climate change or not, we have no other option but to take responsibility for our consumption patterns. With the increasing strain on natural resources, everyone must accept responsibility for individual and corporate consumption practices.”

At the interfaith forum 26 representatives of Canadian faith communities and faith-based organizations (including Mennonite Church Canada) developed and signed this Canadian Interfaith Call for Leadership and Action on Climate Change, and sent a letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper (both are included here). We urge you to share this information with your congregation, and to draw your MP’s attention to these documents and ask for the support of your elected representative.
