Children's Story - The Day the Gifts Got Locked Away

illust. Jenn Weber
2013 Gift, 4 pp
Our Gift Discernment Committee led a service in January. We read this story for the children’s time – accompanied by the original illustrations by Jenn Weber, projected by power point onto the wall. At the end of the story, each child was given a sticky star (available at Scholar’s Choice) which said “Super Star” or “Shining Star” and the children then passed out stars to everyone in the congregation.

Rather than the traditional paper surveys, we put our survey of gifts and interests on the “survey monkey” web site and emailed the link to everyone. To accent this part of the process, the sanctuary was decorated with 200 paper dolls (15” high), strung from the lights and dangling above our heads. Each paper doll represents the members and participants of the congregation. For each person who responds to the survey—either on line or on paper-we will pull down one of the dolls. In the coming Sundays, the congregation will have a visible reminder of the gift discernment survey, some indication of how many persons have responded and the reminder to respond.
