Church Matters Podcast: Episode 77: Treaties and the Church - Part 2 of 2
Guest: Ovide Mercredi

2013, 15 min and 34 min
In the Old Testament, God makes a treaty with the people of Israel. The Old Testament prophets were constantly urging the people to live up to their covenant with God. In the New Testament we read about a New Covenant – or New Treaty – with humanity. Christ brought the New Treaty to humanity, the treaty of love for all peoples, love for creation, and love for God.

Are there parallels between the treaties and covenants God makes with humanity, and treaties Canada’s government has made with First Nations people? Guest Ovide Mercredi explains how his people understand treaties, and reflects on how he understands a faithfully kept treaty.

Mercredi is the National Spokesperson for Treaties 1 to 11, which spans an area from Northern B.C. to Northwestern Ontario. He is a graduate of the University of Manitoba with a Law degree specializing in constitutional law, has served as National Chief for the Assembly of First Nations from 1991 to1997, and as an advocate of non-violent methods for change and travelled to India when he was nominated for the Gandhi Peace Prize. He is a member of the Order of Manitoba and in 2010 received the Social Courage award from the Peace and Justice Studies Association.
