The tranquility of daily life in a small Ukrainian village is disrupted for Peter and Katya Neufeld when their older brother Otto returns from the war against Germany. A terrifying sequence of events begins: the Neufelds must struggles against invading bandits and against the onset of disease and hunger. They are also shaken by the loss of freedom to practise their religion. Miraculously, and after much suffering, those who are strong enough are offered a passage to North America. yet there are still many trials to endure.
