The War Economy: Militarism and the Proliferation of Gun Violence

A guide for a 90 minute interactive and collaborative Bible study, in the spirit of Bible-Sharing. In addition to the general goals of these Bible studies, this study highlights biblical traditions of peacemaking and resistance to militarism. It encourages the understanding of militarism as the war of the rich against the poor, as well as its intersection with race. This study helps people understand that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

This study centres around Mark 5:1-20, the story of the Jesus and the possessed man. It also features an excerpt from the April 4, 1967 speech by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the lead up to the original Poor People’s Campaign.

Includes a handout, song text, and helpful information.

Please note that the link to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech included in the study is broken. You may find the full speech here. You may also listen to the speech here.
