New Girl in Canada: A Memoir

I see a big truck bring white sliced bread to the store on the corner. The truck has a big picture painted on both sides. A little girl eating a slice of white bread with yellow butter. Her hair is yellow and curly and she looks happy. We buy black bread from another store far away on Bloor Street. I like black bread but I would like to eat white bread.

New Girl in Canada is a sequel to Vanderkamp's previous memoir, Magdalene in Paraguay. After seven years in Paraguay, it become possible for Canadian relatives to sponsor the family and they immigrated in 1955. In Canada Magdalene's family faced challenges common to new immigrants: a new language, new customs, financial stress.
