Mennonite historical records say nothing about an agreement between early Mennonite settlers in Manitoba and the original inhabitants, but the Ojibwe oral tradition does.

During a June 2023 tour of the "Mennonite West Reserve" - an area set aside for Mennonites by the government in 1875 - Dave Scott of Swan Lake First Nation told of a "handshake treaty" between the bearded newcomers and his people. He spoke of its history, demise and future.

This graphic portrayal of that tour by Jonathan Dyck first appeared in the February 23, 2024 issue of Canadian Mennonite. For the piece, Dyck collaborated with Dave Scott, an historian and ambassador from the Swan Lake First Nation in southern Manitoba.
