We Can Be Heroes: Camp Curriculum

2021, 17 pp
The 2021 curriculum theme, “We Can Be Heroes” works to display the ways in which faith-in-action is heroism. Dismantling cultural narratives of individual exceptionalism, “We Can Be Heroes” reframes the “hero” to be anyone who bears witness to God’s love.

Weaving together themes from 2011 and 2016, “We Can Be Heroes” draws on Hebrews 12:1-2a; the prayer of St. Francis; and stories from the Bible, Christian History, and our own communities. Together, these elements introduce a particular concept of heroism: one that is given to us by God, guided by the example of Jesus, and strengthened by the power of the Holy Spirit. This heroism celebrates who we are as individuals, walking the path of Jesus using our own gifts, passions, and experiences as we live faithfully. However, this heroism is also rooted in the understanding that 1) we must always be heroes for others and 2) we are not who we are without the communities before, around, and after us. In short, “We Can Be Heroes” works to empower campers to be heroes for others just as they are while wrapping them in the community of faith heroes of which they are a part.
