We are God's Community: Camp Curriculum

2019, 21 pp
This summer's theme at Camps with Meaning is community, more specifically that we are all in God’s community. The theme verses this year are from Colossians 3: 12-14 and I have chosen to use the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) within the curriculum. If a different version fits better with you, the Bible Instructor, please use it. The curriculum is given to you as a guide for your lessons. What is here provides the underlying theological context and understand Camps with Meaning wants the campers to learn this summer at camp. How you choose to teach these concepts, themes, understands is up to you.

It is important that all our campers this summer can connect to God and feel apart of God’s community. Metaphors are great ways for us to connect with God and learn to understand who God is, however, sometimes for campers it is hard to understand metaphors. This year’s curriculum does not centre around a metaphor but around us, our human emotions. We all have emotions and connect or understand human emotions on some kind of level. Even Jesus was human and had emotions.

Another connecting point is through actions. Jesus calls us to action in different ways because community itself is an action. We participate in community, community is dynamic, always moving and change, yet remaining the same in God’s love. Jesus and the Colossians verse give us “Clothes for Community” - compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. These are all actions we can learn and practice to help us be active members in God’s community.
