Mennonites in Canada in the early 1970's were a different people than their parents had been when war broke out in 1939. The war pried many out of their rural communities. Technological and economic changes in agriculture meant that fewer people were needed on the farms, while new opportunities in the towns and cities drew thousands of Mennonites into new environments. The work there required more and different education and training and new styles of leadership and organization. All these changes meant that the witness or mission of Mennonites altered, even though the core concepts and beliefs remained.
