This book is about soul expansion. Girlfriend theology begins by creating "female clusters" in which a girl tells a story from her life. A circle of peers and mentors listens to the story, paying attention to the feelings it evokes. Powerful feelings of awe, fear, grief and horror or mundane feeling of comfort, safety and contentment arise and are shared. Then the group looks at the story for glimpses of God. What images in the story remind us of the holy as seen through scripture and other sacred stories which give life meaning? The group is then asked how the story and its connection to other stories might change the way we live.

Girlfriend theology is a method of religious education that helps adults be present to these adolescent hungers. It is about girls and women creating spaces in which it is safe to share these stories -the good, the bad, and the ugly- so that we might discern the trace of a living, breathing divine presence who seeks our companionship as much today as on the fresh new dawn of creation.

"Doing Girlfriend Theology" shows how to: set up a Girlfriend Theology group, discern themes within the stories the girls tell, ask or prompt theological questions and adapt the information of the book to groups other than girls. Leaders of retreats and small groups will find this to be a valuable resource.
