Sound in the Land is an outgrowth of the festival and conference hosted by Conrad Grebel University College at the University of Waterloo in the spring of 2004. The event gathered participants from Canada and the United States for performances, workshops, poetry readings and formal papers, all of which reflected in some way the intersections between Mennonite culture and music.

This book makes available many of the formal papers that were presented, with the addition of several essays that were commissioned later on topics that had been planned for festival sessions.
