Jacob H. Janzen was born in 1878 in the Ukraine, and became an influential religious and intellectual leader among the Mennonite colonists there. After surviving terrible hardships in the years following World War I, he managed to emigrate to Canada in 1924 with his family. Originally written and published in German, this book describes and comments upon life in Russia during Janzen's young adult life.
