When a young boy sees the Can man rummaging through garbage and an old woman sleeping on a park bench, he feels sad and a little scared. "Sometimes people need help, " his Uncle Wille tells him, and that's why Willie works at the soup kitchen with other volunteers, preparing hearty meals for people who are hungry.

The narrator (the young boy) wonders why anybody would want to work in a soup kitchen, and finally he decides to accompany Uncle Willie to find out.

The author's warm, knowledgeable text and sensitive pictures were inspired by her own experience as a soup kitchen volunteer. They show the soup kitchen to be a freindly, bustling place where workers try hard to make a difference in their neighbors' lives.
