Sixties Girl

Set in 1960s and present-day Winnipeg, this poignant coming-of-age story follows a decade in the life of a young girl growing up in a close-knit family in a time of sweeping social change.

The 1960s were a decade of major world events, revolutionary social changes, and unforgettable fashion and music. But for Laura Johnson, this era of change was much more personal. It was a time when she faced her greatest fears, learned how it felt to be an outsider, realized the pressures that came from being an insider, supported her family through difficult times, and finally found her voice as a storyteller.

In the present day, Laura's grandson Will is dealing with his own growing pains. Having faced bullies at his old school, he is anxious about keeping his newfound friendships intact--and that means keeping his friends as far away from his famous author grandmother as possible. But when Will discovers a suitcase full of old mementoes from the sixties in his grandmother's apartment, the stories that emerge bring them closer together and Will realizes the importance of openness and honesty in any relationship.
